GRP Fibreglass Roofing

How GRP Fibreglass Creates a Hard, Joint-Free Roof

GRP stands for glass reinforced plastic. It is laid wet: resin is rolled into a glass fibre mat over a timber deck, and it cures into one rigid layer with no laps or seams across the roof. A coloured topcoat then seals the surface. The result is a tough finish that copes with foot traffic, which is why we lay GRP on balconies as well as on flat roofs over extensions, garages and dormers across Hertfordshire, Hampshire and Surrey.

GRP does ask more of the conditions on the day. The resin needs dry weather to cure, so installation is planned around the forecast, and the deck must be firm because a hard skin can crack if the boards beneath it flex. It usually costs more than felt, and on a very large roof a single EPDM sheet can be quicker to lay. For a balcony, a roof people stand on or a dormer with awkward corners, though, fibreglass is usually our first suggestion.

What's included

GRP Flat Roofs and Balconies We Install

The main parts of the job, each listed in your quote.

  • Laying new GRP flat roofs that cure into a single rigid layer with no joints for water to find.
  • GRP balconies with a hard-wearing topcoat that stands up to furniture and everyday foot traffic.
  • Fibreglass coverings for dormers, where moulded corners and trims keep awkward shapes watertight.
  • Extension and garage roofs finished with pre-formed GRP edge trims for a neat, durable edge.
  • Replacing the timber deck before laying, so the cured fibreglass sits on a firm base and resists cracking.
  • Repairing cracks in existing GRP by grinding back and re-laminating the affected section.

Pricing

What Goes into the Cost of a GRP Roof

GRP roofs and balconies are priced once the free survey is complete, with these factors shaping the quote.

  • The roof or balcony area and the number of corners, upstands and edges to be formed.
  • Whether the existing deck can stay or must be replaced with new boards.
  • The topcoat colour and any textured, slip-resistant finish wanted on a balcony.
  • The type and length of GRP edge trims, drip trims and gutter details.
  • Access to the roof or balcony, including any scaffold needed on upper floors.

The work

Our GRP Laminating and Curing Method

The main stages of the job, from the first inspection to the final check.

  1. Survey and Weather Planning

We check the deck, drainage and edges, then book the laying for a dry spell so the resin can cure as it should.

  2. Decking and Trims

A firm new deck is fitted where needed and GRP edge trims are fixed in place before any resin is mixed.

  3. Laminating the Glass Fibre

Resin is rolled through the glass fibre mat until it is fully wetted out, with extra reinforcement at corners and upstands.

  4. Topcoat and Completion

Once the laminate has cured, the topcoat is applied to seal and colour the surface. When it has hardened, we review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Your Questions About GRP Fibreglass Roofing

How long does a GRP fibreglass roof last?

A GRP roof laid on a sound deck typically lasts 25 years or more, and it does not dry out and crack in the way older felt tends to. Protecting the topcoat from heavy impacts helps it stay watertight for longer.

Can GRP be used on a balcony?

It can, and balconies are one of its main uses. The cured surface is hard enough for furniture and regular foot traffic, and the topcoat can be given a textured finish for better grip underfoot.

Can GRP be laid in winter?

The resin needs dry conditions and cures more slowly in the cold, so we plan GRP work around the forecast. Rain or frost on an uncured roof can spoil the finish, which is why a dry spell matters.

What colours are available for a GRP topcoat?

Topcoats come in several colours, with greys and darker shades common on roofs, which helps a balcony or visible roof suit the house. We discuss the options with you when we quote.

Can an existing GRP roof be repaired?

Cracks and damaged patches can usually be repaired by grinding back the area, laying fresh resin and glass fibre, and recoating it. If a moving deck caused the cracking, the boards need attention too, and we explain that before quoting.
